A property in Valencia: Coast or Countryside

When people start dreaming about buying a home in Valencia, there is one thing that often appears very high on the wish list:
“We want to be close to the beach.”
And we completely understand why.
You are moving to Spain. You imagine sunshine, palm trees, Mediterranean evenings and having the sea just around the corner.
But then the property search begins.
And suddenly, another question becomes interesting:
What if the same €300,000 could buy you a completely different lifestyle just 30 or 40 minutes inland?
What does €250,000/ €300,000 buy you?
Closer to Valencia city and the coast, €250,000 / €300,000 may mean making compromises. Perhaps less outdoor space, a smaller property, no private pool, less privacy or a location slightly further away from where you originally wanted to be.
Move inland, however, and the picture can change considerably.
With a budget of around €250,000 / €300,000, you can still find some very interesting properties inland — and there are attractive options for considerably less. Depending on the area, the condition of the property and exactly what you are looking for, your money can simply go much further.
A detached villa, several bedrooms, your own swimming pool, a generous plot, outdoor terraces, a barbecue or paella area, space for family and friends and, very often, much more privacy can all become realistic possibilities.
And that difference in value can make you reconsider one of the first things you put on your wish list:
Do you really need to live close to the beach?
Once you have your own pool, how often do you actually go to the beach?
This is something buyers don't always think about beforehand.
Living near the Mediterranean sounds wonderful — and it is. But going to the beach also means getting ready, driving there, finding parking, carrying towels, chairs and bags, and sharing the beach with quite a few other people in July and August.
When your swimming pool is ten steps from your kitchen, the urgency to go to the beach suddenly becomes a lot smaller.
Morning coffee.
Swimsuit.
Pool.
No parking required.
You may still love spending a Sunday at the beach, having lunch by the sea or walking along the promenade in winter. But the beach doesn't necessarily need to be part of your everyday life simply because you live in Valencia.
It can become something you visit and enjoy, rather than something you need to live next to.
Inland doesn't necessarily mean isolated
Another misconception is that moving inland means living in the middle of nowhere.
It can — if that's exactly what you're looking for.
But many inland towns and urbanisations around Valencia have supermarkets, restaurants, schools, medical services and other everyday amenities within around a 10-minute drive, while Valencia city, the airport and even the coast can still be within comfortable driving distance.
In many cases, you can enjoy the peace, space and privacy of living inland without feeling disconnected from everything else.
The important question therefore isn't simply:
“How far is the beach?”
It might be:
“How do I actually want to live?”
Think about an ordinary Tuesday, not just your holidays
This is perhaps one of the most important things to consider when buying a home in Spain.
When you're here on holiday, being close to the beach can feel essential. But living somewhere permanently — or spending several months of the year there — is different.
Think about your normal daily life.
Do you want to walk to restaurants and cafés?
Do you want to lock the door and travel frequently without worrying about maintaining a large plot?
Then a coastal or city property may suit you perfectly.
But if your dream is having breakfast outside, a garden, your own pool, room for guests, dogs running around, summer dinners under the stars and enough space that you don't hear everything your neighbour is doing...
then looking a little further inland can completely change what your budget can buy.
Don't search by kilometres. Search by lifestyle.
We often see buyers starting with a map.
“Maximum 20 kilometres from the beach.”
But perhaps the better way to start is with your normal Tuesday.
Where will you have your morning coffee?
Do you work from home?
Do you want to walk everywhere or are you happy driving?
Do you want neighbours nearby or would you rather have privacy?
Will you really go to the beach four times a week — or did that simply sound like part of the Spanish dream?
There is no right answer.
For some people, being able to walk to the Mediterranean is priceless.
For others, discovering what their budget can buy them 30 or 40 minutes inland completely changes their search.
And sometimes the dream of living near the beach turns into something they hadn't considered before:
Living beside their own pool, surrounded by space and tranquillity — and driving to the beach whenever they actually feel like going.
